The Process: Surface Prep

Surface PrepWe process all projects the same at Powder CraftTM. The only variable lies in the difference between the type of metal we are processing, such as aluminum vs. steel. The same goes for brass or any other type of metal substrate. Keeping the substrate qualities as natural as possible is our primary goal. We start by stripping your old coating. If your project is not coated with wet paint or powder coat, it still gets abrasively blasted. This gives the substrate an abraded surface which allows the powder coating to fuse into the metal surface much better. After stripping we do a mineral rinse. After rinsing, the project is placed into an out-gassing oven to rid it of any subsurface contaminates. Then we go for color.

This is a look at a stock frame being cleaned up before powder coating. We always double-check the frame for cracks, welding splatters, cut or grind marks, and then remove them before powder coating. You'll notice the shop dog Fred in the background double-checking our work.
